Drinking Water, Water Well Testing

Did you know that more than 75% of Wyoming's population relies on groundwater for their drinking water needs? With the abundance of rural settings across the state, this is considerably higher than the national average of about 45%. Water quality varies considerably across the State and is influenced by naturally occurring constituents such as minerals, salts, metals, etc. present with it. Depending upon the amount present, naturally occurring constituents can affect the taste, color and odor of the water, as well as its safety for human consumption, or suitability for other types of uses such as irrigation and livestock watering. In addition, groundwater quality can be impacted by wast disposal practices, spill, leaks or other activities that can render it unsuitable for use.

Currently there is no government agency (federal, state, or local) that regularly monitors water quality from private drinking water wells in Wyoming.

So, who is responsible for ensuring the quality of your drinking water is safe? You are!

When was the last time your well water was tested?

Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality recommends you regularly test your well water and follow steps to protect and maintain your well. It's important for private well owners to regularly inspect, maintain, and sample their wells, and to be aware of potential threats to groundwater nearby and on their property.

The following people are especially susceptible to illness caused by contaminants in water: infants, young children, those who are pregnant and/or nursing, the elderly, and people whose immune systems are compromised.
